Master Thesis “CFD investigation of conjugate heat transfer including phase change phenomena in quenching process: Model and parameter study”

Imagine
  • The development of advanced structural light metal parts for mobility application is a significant contribution to a sustainable and more efficient usage of energy resources.
  • Continuous casting is the origin process for most of structural light metal parts. This process includes several complex thermodynamic phenomena, e.g. solidification and quenching. Therefore, to capture the effects of surface cooling in the continuous casting process a CFD model is already developed.
Engage
  • Literature review
  • Get familiar with the existing CFD model and the underlying theory
  • Identification of relevant model parameters and planning of parameter study
  • Modification of the model including applied user defined function (UDF) code
  • Evaluation of the results and comparison with experimental data   
Achieve
  • In this study, a model and parameter study of the existing CFD model needs to be conducted.
  • Subsequently, the simulation results have to be evaluated by experimental data. 
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner (m/f):
  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computational Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics or equivalent discipline
  • Basic knowledge in thermodynamics
  • Knowledge in CFD simulation with Ansys Fluent or CFX
  • High motivation for interdisciplinary applied research
  • Interest in computer and programming
  • Very good German and/or English

What to expect:
EUR 978,- gross per month for 20 hours/week based on the collective agreement. There will be additional company benefits. As a research institution, we are familiar with the supervision and execution of Master theses and we are looking forward to supporting you accordingly!
