Master Thesis “Numerical investigation of flow and heat transfer characteristics of a natural refrigerant within ejector and vortex tube”

  • The aim of the FFG project VWE is to investigate the application of the ejectors and vortex tubes towards increasing the efficiency of high temperature heat pumps based on natural refrigerants, by recovering a part of the expansion work within the refrigerant cycle
  • To this purpose the 3D Navier-Stokes solver is used to perform a set of numerical simulations, investigating the ejector and vortex tube performance.
  • Firstly, the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics will be analyzed for standard configurations of ejectors and vortex tubes, and the obtained results will be validated against the experimental and numerical data available in literature.
  • Subsequently, different geometry specifications will be analyzed, as well as the interplay between relevant heat pump operating conditions and the properties of natural refrigerants.
  • Finally, the characteristic curve of performance will be derived for investigated ejectors and vortex tubes when used within high temperature heat pumps.
  • Geometry generation of vortex tube and ejector with different parameters
  • Meshing, numerical setup and simulations of different ejector and vortex tube variants
  • Analysis of the obtained results and extraction of the flow characteristics
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner (m/f):
  • Master student in technical physics, in mechanical engineering or similar
  • Knowledge in fluid dynamics and numerical modeling
  • Expertise in fluid simulation in CFD
  • Familiarity with parallel computations
  • Analytical thinking
  • Very good communication skills in English

What to expect:
