PhD Thesis “Process optimisation for Li-ion pouch cell production”

  • Costly energy storage systems such as Li-ion batteries are the main reason for the overall costs of electric vehicles. Cell production, depending on the battery technology and format, takes more than 15-20% of the overall Li-ion battery costs. For future electrification of the automotive sector, further research is needed for the reduction of the cost-intensive factor of cell production. Due to their flexibility and lightweight design, pouch cells are one of the most promising formats for electric drives.
Engage
  • The goal of this PhD thesis is the detailed description and evaluation of different Li-ion pouch cell production steps (e.g. slurry preparation, coating, calendering, electrode cutting, stacking, electrolyte filling, cell formation etc.) regarding their time, cost, mass and energy consumption. Critical steps are identified, improvements suggested, and the resulting achievements are to be evaluated which special focus on the cost factor and quality increase of the cell.
Achieve
  • Industry-orientated production of Li-ion pouch cells (up to 10 Ah)
  • Evaluation and comparison of each production step, its time, yield, cost and energy consumption for different cathode/anode systems
  • Improvement of determined critical steps
  • Scientific communication (publications, conference contributions, internal presentations)
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner (m/f):
  • Master degree in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, process engineering or related fields.
  • You have great interest in interdisciplinary formulation of questions as well as hands-on skills in engineering.
  • Experience in energy and mass balancing, battery systems with focus on Li-ion technology and their production processes are beneficial.
  • Very good communication skills in English

What to expect:
At least EUR 2.072,00 gross for 30 hours/week based on the collective agreement. The actual salary will be determined individually based on your qualifications and experience.
