
At the LKR Leichtmetallkompetenzzentrum Ranshofen, we are leaders in the development of sustainable materials and processing technologies. We are the primary contact in this field for industry partners in the automotive, aerospace, space, and rail vehicle sectors within the EU. In particular, advanced manufacturing technologies such as wire-based additive manufacturing require intensive further development due to their intrinsic and unique complexities. Therefore, both materials and processing technologies need to be advanced equally.
For our multidisciplinary team located in Ranshofen, we offer a position, that includes the completion of a PhD thesis.
You will carry out research work and process analyses in the field of additive material technologies of light metals using advanced characterisation methods, in particular high-energy X-ray diffraction methods. The focus will lie on process characterisation, microstructure analysis using inoperando diffraction methods.
Junior Scientist (f/m/d) for Advanced In-Operando WAAM Material and Process Characterisation (incl. a PhD-Thesis)

- You work on a focused, industry-relevant fundamental research field in process and material characterisation, becoming an internationally recognised expert in wire-based additive manufacturing.
- You support project management in national and international collaboration projects and work with project partners from small, medium, and large-scale industries.
- You independently plan, conduct, and evaluate scientific experiments, process results, and summarise findings for documentation and presentation.
- With your acquired expertise and know-how, you contribute to securing further research projects.
- You publish your research results both as part of a team and as a first author in scientific journals and participate in international conferences.
- You supervise interns or master’s students in your field of research.
- You independently develop solutions to previously unanswered research questions.
- You actively contribute your network and perspectives on challenges to projects.
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:
- Completed master's studies in materials science, physics, metallurgy, mineralogy, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
- Expertise in developing test plans for process and material investigations, as well as a solid understanding of materials science.
- Experience in characterisation methods, particularly diffraction techniques, is an advantage.
- Interest in developing novel methods, especially in research at European large-scale research facilities.
- Programming skills (C++, Python, or similar) are advantageous.
- Independent and structured working style, strong communication, and teamwork skills.
- Passion for research, enthusiasm for unconventional solutions, creativity, and visionary thinking.
- Excellent English skills, both written and spoken; German language skills are an advantage.
What to expect:
The minimum gross annual salary on a full-time basis (38,5 h / week) according to the collective agreement is EUR 55.482,--. The actual salary will be determined individually, based on your qualifications and experience.
