As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, we are dedicated to make substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitalisation. To achieve our goals, we rely on our specific research, development and technology competencies, which are the basis of our commitment to excellence in all areas. With our open culture of innovation and our motivated, international teams, we are working to position AIT as Austria's leading research institution at the highest international level and to make a positive contribution to the economy and society.
Our Research Group Hybrid Electric Aircraft Technologies part of the Center for Transport Technologies is looking for new Ingenious Partners for our location in Vienna. Our focus lies on the delivery of advanced Aerial Vehicle Technologies, supporting carbon neutrality and technological sovereignty in air transport. We are exploring new technologies, solutions, and methodologies to ensure the safe operation of aircraft in icing conditions, design and develop hydrogen fuel systems and hybrid electric storage and propulsion for next generation aircraft.
As a member of our growing team, you will contribute to cutting-edge research and the implementation of ambitious, large-scale European research projects, that advance the next generation of aeronautical batteries.
Scientist (f/m/d) for Designing, Testing and Qualifying Next Generation Aeronautical Batteries
CENTER FOR TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGIES
- You will support the development of next generation batteries for aeronautical applications, from cell selection, module and pack design, prototype assembly, testing and qualification.
- Depending on your background, you will develop and test: (a) physics-based AI/ML methods interconnecting physical and virtual testing and design of aeronautical batteries from cell to pack; (b) Numerical methods and tools for the reliable prediction of the battery states, including battery safety from cell to pack level; and (c) high-voltage/high-power or light-weight battery prototypes including structural batteries and multifunctional electrical energy storage.
- You will interface with experienced scientists and engineers in the field of aerospace across Europe.
- You will work closely with European Institutions and international partners from research organisations and industry on multi-annual large-scale collaborative projects.
- You will build your own network, contribute to defining our strategic research direction, and prepare proposals for new projects with the support of your colleagues – Together, we bring ideas to life.
- You will publish your results in high-ranking journals and will support other scientists in doing so.
- You will supervise PhD and master’s students.
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:
- PhD-level qualification in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline, with a focus on battery design and testing, preferably for high-voltage/high-power aerospace applications.
Alternatively, an MSc-level qualification combined with relevant professional experience may be accepted.
- A traceable scientific publication record is an essential requirement. Experience publishing in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals is required.
- Proven experience in at least one of the following profiles: (i) physics-based AI/ML methods in applied engineering; (ii) high voltage/high power electrical design and testing; (iii) light weight (composite/metal/multifunctional) design and testing; (iv) hybrid-electric or more-electric systems and aircraft architecture design. The candidate must describe in the cover letter how his/her CV and personal interests for future development align with at least one of the profiles listed above, explicitly referring to profiles (i)–(iv). The candidate must also substantiate the claimed expertise with relevant publications and project participation consistent with the CV. Failure to provide this information in the cover letter will result in rejection of the application.
- Programming skills in Python, MATLAB, including Simulink, C/C++, or similar languages are required.
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of battery electrochemistry and understanding of battery modelling methodologies are highly valued.
- Experience with state-of-the-art simulation tools (such as ANSYS, Modelica, or Dymola) are highly valued.
- Experience in battery testing at cell, module, and pack level is considered an advantage.
- Experience in industrial projects and/or European research programmes, such as Horizon Europe or Clean Aviation, including an understanding of the European aerospace research ecosystem, is an asset.
- A high level of motivation to pursue a scientific or research-oriented career is required. Strong self-motivation and personal drive are essential.
- Excellent communication skills in English, including proficiency in technical writing, are mandatory. Knowledge of German is desirable.
What to expect:
- The minimum gross annual salary on a full-time basis (38,5 h / week) according to the collective agreement is EUR 61.334,--. The actual salary will be determined individually, based on your qualifications and experience.
- Highlights of our employee benefits include a canteen and meal allowance, organic coffee, tea and fruit baskets, preventive healthcare benefits and company doctor, pension fund, additional days off for various life events, family benefits (including two weeks of paid paternity leave “Papa-Weeks” and leisure subsidies), voucher programme, sports, cultural and socialising events and many more, as well as flexitime models (incl. up to 50% home office), travel support for conferences and networking, and individual training and career development opportunities.
