As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, we are dedicated to make substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitalisation. With our open culture of innovation and our motivated, international teams, we are working to position AIT as Austria's leading research institution at the highest international level and to make a positive contribution to the economy and society.
Our Center for Digital Safety and Security is looking for new Ingenious Partners for our location in Vienna. In the Reliable Wireless Communication and Sensing research team, we develop advanced physical layer 6G technologies. As a member of a growing team, you will perform applied research with European scientific and industrial partners and be involved in the successful execution of multiple European research projects.
Junior Scientists (f/m/d) for 6G Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC)
CENTER FOR DIGITAL SAFETY & SECURITY
- You will contribute to the development of numerical signal processing algorithms for mobile 5G/6G ISAC scenarios. The algorithms will be validated using numerical simulations and empirical measurements from a software defined radio (SDR) testbed, combining radio frequency (RF), fiber optic, and quantum sensing.
- Depending on your background you will conduct algorithm research and participate in designing real-time experiments using SDR hardware and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS).
- Together with experienced colleagues, you will engage in establishing a unique 6G distributed MIMO sensing testbed based on SDR technology using open-source tools such as GNU Radio, RFNoC and LabVIEW for real-time FPGA algorithm design operating from 0.4 – 20 GHz.
- You will learn how to evaluate the results and prepare them for further studies.
- You will publish your research results in international journals and present them at conferences.
- You will accumulate experience in a research field, that has an enormous range of applications from construction, logistics, aviation and railways to agriculture, robotics and defense.
- You will gain experience in a group of international scientists and build up your professional network within European wide research projects.
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:
- Completed technical studies (at least MSc.) related to Telecommunications, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
- First experience in at least one of the following profiles: (i) multi-static MIMO UAV sensing, (ii) quantum sensing with NV centers and Rydberg cells, (iii) multimodal sensing using fiber optic networks in ground/seafloor and distributed RF sensors, (iv) ISAC using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and two-way ranging. The candidate shall describe in the cover letter how her/his CV and her/his personal interests for future development match with at least one of the profiles above (explicitly referring to (i)–(iv)) and substantiate the claimed expertise. Please note that applications that do not address this point may not be considered further.
- Hands-on experience in radio frequency (RF) lab experimentation and printed circuit board design for the profiles listed above.
- Excellent knowledge in the field of signal processing, RF propagation modeling, AI/ML and numerical simulation software development (MATLAB or Python)
- Sound knowledge of electromagnetic field simulation tools, antenna design, and real-time FPGA programming.
- Interest in reading and writing scientific publications and enjoyment of solving application-oriented questions from industry
- High level of commitment and ability to work in a team
- Good language skills in English and German (spoken & written)
What to expect:
- The minimum gross annual salary on a full-time basis (38,5 h / week) according to the collective agreement is EUR 56.784,--. The actual salary will be determined individually, based on your qualifications and experience.
- Highlights of our employee benefits include a canteen and meal allowance, organic coffee, tea and fruit baskets, preventive healthcare benefits and company doctor, pension fund, additional days off for various life events, family benefits (including two weeks of paid paternity leave “Papa-Weeks” and leisure subsidies), voucher programme, sports, cultural and socialising events and many more, as well as flexitime models (incl. up to 50% home office), travel support for conferences and networking, and individual training and career development opportunities.
We encourage our Junior Scientist (f/m/d) to pursue a doctoral degree at TU Wien.
As part of our AIT-PhD programme, which is carried out with renowned universities, you will have the opportunity to conduct your PhD thesis in collaboration with our experts and our national and international project partners from industry or other research organisations.
At AIT, we create an inclusive and family-friendly working environment that promotes equal opportunities and actively strengthens diversity across our workforce and in leadership positions. Among other initiatives, we are committed to increasing the proportion of women in our company and therefore particularly welcome applications from female applicants.
Please submit your complete application documents online, consisting of your CV, a cover letter, relevant certificates (transcript of records), as well as a proof of identity.
