Our Center for Digital Safety & Security located in Vienna invites applications for an internship. Our experts from the Center for Digital Safety & Security are developing state-of-the-art information and communication technologies to ensure that our systems are highly secure and reliable in the context of comprehensive digitalisation and global networking – Hereby we focus on a variety of key technologies like Distributed IT Systems, Internet of Things, IoT, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain Technologies, Quantum & Photonic Technologies, Wireless Systems (6G) and Digital solutions for crisis & disaster management.

 

Our Research Field Quantum Key Distribution, within the Competence Unit "Optical Quantum Technologies", has been leading large European research projects in the field of quantum cryptography since 2004 and specialises in applied research of new methods to exploit the physical properties of optical media and use quantum effects to increase digital security.

Internship "PC-Interface for Analog Tec Controller"

CENTER FOR DIGITAL SAFETY & SECURITY

  • Under the guidance of our interdisciplinary team, you will help to design a PC-Interface for an existing analog TEC (Thermoelectric Cooler) controller.
  • You will specifically support us with:
    • the analysis of the existing analog TEC controller and identification of components, signal paths, and PC interface options;
    • the selection and integration of a suitable microcontroller and definition of its interface to the analog circuit;
    • the design a compact, reliable PCB combining µC and TEC controller;
    • the development of firmware for control and PC communication via SCPI;
    • Testing, validation, and refinement of the complete system (hardware + firmware).
  • You will have the opportunity to discuss your work experiences and results with experienced scientific peers and to connect with other bachelor’s, master’s or PhD students.

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:

  • You have graduated from a Higher Technical Education Institute (HTL) within the last 2 years and have not yet started a university degree, or you are enrolled in a bachelor’s degree programme in Physics, Electronics Engineering or a similar subject
  • You have basic knowledge of microcontroller programming (e.g RaspberryPI Pico, STM32, Arduino, ESP32, or similar)
  • Basic knowledge of PCB design (KiCad, Altium, or Eagle)
  • A curiosity for analog circuits
  • Analytical thinking and enthusiasm for highly innovative research
  • Interest in working in a multidisciplinary team and collaborate on different topics
  • Good verbal and written English and German skills

 

What to expect:

  • Duration of the internship: 1 to 3 months
  • Start date: summer 2026 – However there is some flexibility concerning the start-date
  • A gross monthly salary of EUR 1.195,-- for HTL graduates and EUR 1.461,-- for students for 38.5 hours per week. In addition to our company benefits, we offer flexible working conditions and work experience in a highly innovative environment.
